Classic examples
To help you with your application to the ED MSTII, we provide some classic scenarios
Example 1 - You are on a Masters placement in Grenoble, and the subject of the placement suggests an interesting research project: you are discussing with your advisors or degree supervisors the possibilities of continuing with a doctoral thesis.* Discuss the subject with your advisors.
* To make it easier, check that the potential thesis supervisor is in one of the laboratories affiliated to the Doctoral School, is qualified to supervise research (‘HDR’), and will supervise no more than 3 full-time doctoral students (including you). A thesis management team may include other co-advisors.
* Discuss funding and other options
-> Your potential thesis advisor will post a subject on the adum.fr website, and you will apply for it via your application space.
Example 2 - You do not yet know the potential advisors, but you have found a subject you would like to apply for on the https://adum.fr/as/ed/proposition.pl?site=edmstii website.
* Using your application space on adum.fr, you apply for the subject, enclosing your academic file.
* If you are pre-selected, you will prepare for an audition with potential advisors to test your skills in the discipline and your suitability for a doctoral thesis. You meet the potential thesis advvisor. In principle, he or she will tell you whether the thesis project is already funded, or whether it corresponds to an application for a doctoral research grant from the ED MSTII. If you have sufficient funding of your own (professional activity), tell the potential thesis director.
* If, at the end of the candidate hearings, you are recommended by the potential thesis director, your academic file goes to the Doctoral School, which must decide whether to admit you on the basis of the academic quality of the file and the subject. If you are applying for registration on the basis of a foreign diploma, your application will be submitted to the Commission des dispenses (special documents are required). This stage may cause a delay.
Cotutelle thesis:
In certain cases of scientific collaboration between two countries, you can do your thesis in cotutelle to obtain a double degree at the end of your course. This requires :
- a thesis director and a laboratory in France and abroad
- forms are available from the Collège Doctoral's International Relations Department: cotutelle-international@univ-grenoble-alpes.fr
In general, the agreement is signed for 3 years. If the thesis is extended, an amendment must be drawn up in order to continue to qualify for the double degree.
Co-tutored doctoral students register each year at both partner institutions, but pay their administrative registration fees at only one of them, and at least once at each.
