Supervisors - HDR

ED - Encadrants & HDR

Each doctoral student has a thesis director and possibly a co-director and/or co-supervisors. It is recommended that a thesis management team should not exceed 2 people.
A thesis director may not exceed a supervision rate of more than 300% (i.e. 3 doctoral students supervised at 100% or 6 doctoral students supervised at 50%).

To be a PhD advisor you need:

  • Hold the Habilitation à Diriger des Recherches (HDR), or obtain approval for a particular thesis.
  • Approval is granted only once and must be validated by the Mathematics sub-committee or the Mathematics-Applied-Computing sub-committee.
  • Be attached to the doctoral school.
Hiring a doctoral student for a thesis is a major responsibility. The rights and duties of each of the parties involved (doctoral student, thesis director, laboratory and doctoral school) are detailed in the doctoral charter, which is signed in the 1st year of the thesis. The thesis director's responsibility is to do everything possible to ensure that the thesis is carried out in good conditions and can be defended within the normal three-year period.

Request to be attached to Doctoral School :

Once you have obtained your HDR, you must apply to join the Doctoral School of your choice. ATTENTION! You can only be attached to one doctoral school.
Attachment to the ED MSTII is not automatic; you must apply to the ED by sending an e-mail to: ed-mstii@univ-grenoble-alpes.fr.

TEMPORARY APPROVAL
The temporary approval allows a person who does not yet have an HDR to supervise a thesis officially.
The rules laid down by the Doctoral College are :
Only one approval granted in a career.
> You must have co-supervised at least one defended thesis.
> Approval is given for a specific thesis (subject, doctoral student, funding).
> You must commit to defending an HDR within three years (or, if you are close to defending your HDR, provide the opinion of the Chair of the HDR Committee). If the HDR is not obtained before the doctoral student defends his/her thesis, another HDR researcher must officially supervise the final thesis.

NB: it is often possible to defend the HDR in the morning and the thesis in the afternoon.
Applications must be sent to the ED. They are examined by the HDR Committee.

Thesis follow-up and defence

In addition to the usual supervisory tasks concerning the "research" part of the doctoral student's studies, the thesis directors must :
- ensure that the Thesis Monitoring Committee (CSI, see tab in the Thesis section) is set up and that the report is submitted to the Doctoral School by 31 October each year (compulsory for each re-registration)
- ensure that the thesis follow-up report (RST, available via the doctoral student's ADUM site) is completed and sent to the Doctoral School before 31 October each year (mandatory for each re-enrolment).
- ensure that the information sent to the Doctoral School concerning the thesis jury and the status of jury members (employer, HDR or non-HDR, grade) is correct.

Any non-compliant jury may invalidate the thesis diploma.
