Conditions & prerequisites

To start a Phd thesis, you need :
- A thesis subject.
- A thesis supervisor who is Habilitated to Supervise Research (HDR) and attached to the MSTII Doctoral School.
- A host laboratory. If you need support, contact the team working in your field directly.
- Funding for the entire duration of the thesis, right up to the defense.

You must meet the conditions set out in the decree of August 7, 2006, i.e. hold either
either a French diploma conferring the grade of Master following a training program establishing aptitude for research (M2R, M2P, engineering diploma)
or a foreign diploma of equivalent level: 5 years of study and research training (attested by the CED's commission for validation of prior learning).
Once you have met the requirements, you can follow the application procedure here.

Cotutelle thesis:
In certain cases of scientific collaboration between two countries, you can do your thesis in cotutelle to obtain a double degree at the end of your course. This requires :
- a thesis director and a laboratory in France and abroad
- forms are available from the Collège Doctoral's International Relations Department: cotutelle-international@univ-grenoble-alpes.fr
In general, the agreement is signed for 3 years. If the thesis is extended, an amendment must be drawn up in order to continue to qualify for the double degree.
Co-tutored doctoral students register each year at both partner institutions, but pay their administrative registration fees at only one of them, and at least once at each.
GOOD TO KNOW

Initial thesis registration is valid only for the current academic year. You must re-register each year between July and October with the Doctoral School and Université Grenoble Alpes.

All doctoral students must take training courses (equivalent to at least 120 hours) during the thesis period to be authorized to defend their thesis.

A thesis lasts 3 years. Any longer will require a special dispensation.
CIFRE THESIS
For candidates applying for a thesis funded by a CIFRE grant: The application is examined in the same way as any other by the specialization manager and/or the ED director. As the ED carries out a scientific evaluation of each application, it may reject any application of insufficient scientific merit, even if the application satisfies the administrative criteria. If the application is accepted, a registration certificate is issued, subject to funding. Once funding has been approved, you have 3 months from the contract start date to register.
Completed applications can be sent by email or via the ADUM platform by opting for the unsolicited application option.
